While not as sticky sweet as a marshmallow treat, Althea officinalis (the mallow plant) should also be a staple in your pantry. The marshmallow plant is a perennial native to Europe and parts of Asia and Africa. It gets its name from marshy, swamp-like growing conditions where the plant thrives. The entire plant, including the leaves and roots, has been consumed for thousands of years with ties to ancient Egyptian, Arab, Greek and Roman cultures. Traditionally prized for its thick mucilage, the plant was used in beverages as well as desserts and salves for the skin.

Marshmallow Leaf contains high levels of flavonoids, phytonutrients that help to support the body and may help to prevent oxidative stress. This gentle, soothing, herbal infusion is a delicious way to wind down. It is advised to consume Marshmallow Leaf with at least 250mL (8 oz) of liquid. Any orally administered drugs should be taken 1 hour before or several hours after consuming Marshmallow Leaf as components of the plant may slow absorption.
