Valeriana wallichii, or Indian valerian, is a perennial herb which grows throughout India and the Himalayas. It can be interchanged with Valeriana officinalis, or garden valerian, common to Europe and Asia. The root of the herb has been used traditionally in Ayurvedic medicine for its sedative properties. Many choose valerian to treat headaches, stress and anxiety due to the sense of relaxation it promotes. As an aromatic herb, it is also often used for its carminative properties.
While valerian root may be used to get a good night’s rest, it is not advisable to use as a long-term treatment for clinically diagnosed insomnia. For those who do not have diagnosed sleep disorders and are looking for a peaceful night’s sleep, it is best to use valerian root regularly as opposed to as needed* – consistency is key! Since this herbal brew does have a pungent taste and smell, we suggest brewing it with another herbal tea like chamomile or peppermint or using lemon or honey to taste.
