Urtica dioica, also known as “Stinging Nettle”, is an herbaceous perennial plant originally native to Europe. If you’ve ever brushed against Nettle and its hairy bristles, you may have noticed a stinging sensation. The trichomes that attach to your skin on contact contain histamine, which causes an inflammatory response from the body. However, once the plant is dried or cooked the notorious leaves lose their sting and you are left with a deeply nutritious plant that has been utilized and consumed for centuries.
The leaves of the Nettle plant can be steeped into an herbaceous flavored tea, or can be eaten once they have been harvested and cooked down. The flavor of Nettle tea is rich and vegetal and it produces a dark, amber liquor. Nettle is a natural source of protein and antioxidants and rich in essential vitamins and minerals making it an excellent addition to any herbal tea lover’s collection!
